Army Sleeping Bags

Army sleeping bags were designed keeping the military specifications in mind. Soldiers when on war front or any rescue expedition require a tough sleeping bag which would keep them warm at night, must be made of tough material to withstand the wear and tear and be light enough to be easily carried around. The army sleeping bags were equipped with a quick release device so that it opened up quickly in case of emergency.

The army sleeping bag was first invented in the United States in 1942 during the 2^nd World War. The bags were called M-1942 sleeping bags. They were filled with a mixture of feather and down to provide warmth in extremely cold weather. They were mummy shaped so that they could be compressed easily and occupied less space. These army sleeping bags came with a slide fastener which had a quick release device that enabled the bag to open up quickly when emergency arose. The army sleeping bag came with a water resistant case.

Over the years many modifications have taken place in the design of the army sleeping bags. The basic requirements warmth, feather weight, durability and compactness remain the same. In 1949 the M-1949 was designed, it was filled with feather and came with a water repellent case. The 70s saw new versions of the army sleeping bags, the Intermediate Cold Weather and the Extreme Cold Weather. In the 2000s came the modular army sleeping bags. They contain two mummy shaped sleeping bags.

Because of their toughness and durability, many mountaineers and sportsmen prefer army sleeping bags. Other sleeping bags though also comfortable and light weigh are not designed to endure extreme cold. Plus they are not water resistant and often absorb moisture like a sponge resulting in an uncomfortable soggy night. For mountaineers army sleeping bags are especially beneficial as they offer protection against the intense cold conditions on high altitudes where the temperature could be below zero.
